Girl Scout Family Science Festival Outreach Article

On October 3, 2010, SWE-UCLA participated in the Girl Scout Family Science Festival at Caltech in Pasadena, Ca. The day was aimed at sharing and spreading a love for science among girl scouts and their families. Numerous Girl Scout troops and universities participated, providing activities for the girls and sharing information about their organizations. SWE-UCLA members taught girls about physics by helping them make catapults with paint sticks, tape, and Dixie cups. Girls also had a chance to learn about fingerprinting by seeing their own fingerprints using lead and tape. Both activities were a real hit with all the kids, and we had many visitors at our booth. SWE-UCLA also provided information to parents and students about math, science, and engineering, encouraging girls to pursue their interests in these subjects. Many UCLA students shared stories with girls about their experiences in college and with engineering in their lives. The Girl Scout Family Science Festival was also a good opportunity for UCLA students to network with other groups from other universities and with companies, like JPL. There were many cool exhibits to look at, like a hydroelectric car from SeaWorld and solar panels that powered a blender.
There were so many things to learn and experience for Girl Scouts, college students, and parents. Overall, the day was very fun and productive, and all the volunteers really enjoyed the event. SWE-UCLA will be attending the Girl Scout Cookie Kick-off in January as well. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Outreach Director Jasmine Shah at jasmine11@ucla.edu.
