It was a warm sunny afternoon on April 24, 2010, and the Society of Women Engineers came out to the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center to relax and barbeque. The event drew a variety of people including some brand new SWE member and several members of UCLA’s Linux User Group in addition to the regular SWE veterans. This allowed some of the inactive SWE members to become more involved. The main attractions of this barbecue social were free food, sunshine, friends, and a giant beach ball. The event was planned during the weekend between 4th and 5th week, which allowed members to relax either after a stressful week of midterms, or before the upcoming week of midterms (or both if they are extremely unlucky). Members gathered around the grill and talked of everything from what classes and professors to take or avoid to summer plans. Others grabbed the gigantic beach ball and attempted to play catch with it, which proved to be difficult due to the size and momentum of the beach ball once it got going. The burgers and hot dogs were delicious and the drinks (water and a variety of soda) were kept cool in a large bucket full of ice water. During the set-up, several members put their engineering minds to work and developed a plastic aqueduct to easily transfer water from the drinking fountain into the ice bucket. Overall, the barbecue social allowed members to escape from their academic pressures and enjoy good food and bright sunshine in the company of old and new friends.
