This past Saturday, April 17, SWE hosted an outreach event with elementary school kids at the Felicia Manhood Senior Center. The main purpose of this event was to interact with elementary school kids from underprivileged areas. Along with four of SWE’s executive board members, many adult volunteers were also present to help out with the kids’ activities. As soon as all the kids arrived, they each picked a book of their interest and paired off with a volunteer to help them read it aloud for the next hour. Not only was it a great bonding experience, but as a volunteer it was also very rewarding to help out the kids with their reading skills. After reading, we took a snack break with yummy crackers and cuties. We took this opportunity to formally introduce the SWE committee to the kids and tell them about Engineering and its applications in the real world. We then followed up with an “engineering” activity that involved making rocket balloons (with strings, straws, balloons, and tape), which turned out to be a big hit with the kids. Hopefully, they will be successful engineers of our next generation!
